Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Alta Colina different from other Paso Robles wineries?
We’re a 100% estate winery. Every grape in every bottle comes from our own 32 planted acres on a 130-acre family-owned property in the Adelaida District. Bob Tillman found the property in 2003, and the family still runs day-to-day operations, from the vineyard to the tasting counter. We farm regeneratively (no-till, cover cropping, compost extracts) and specialize in Rhône varieties. If you’re looking for a small, single-estate Rhône producer where the people pouring your wine are the people who grew it, this is it.
Where are you located, and how do I get there?
Alta Colina is a 130-acre property in westside Paso Robles. Our Tasting Room is located at 2825 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 and it is easily accessible from Adelaida Road. We’re about 10 minutes by car from downtown Paso Robles. Our Summit Vineyard Tastings and Trailer Pond vintage trailer campground are situated about a mile back on our private, family-owned estate vineyard property. Summit Vineyard Tastings and camping stays at the Trailer Pond require advance reservations. Note, the Trailer Pond is not available to visit outside a pre-booked camping stay.
How far is Alta Colina from downtown Paso Robles?
About 10 minutes by car from downtown Paso Robles.
Are there other wineries or attractions nearby?
The Alta Colina Tasting Room is located in Paso Robles’ Adelaida District with many wonderful tasting rooms nearby. You can spend a full tasting day in the Adelaida District including lunch options at some of our neighbor wineries like Parrish Family Vineyard, Halter Ranch, Daou, JUSTIN Winery. For a special evening activity, check out Sensorio and experience a multi-acre outdoor art installation.
Is there parking and paved roads to the winery?
The road is paved all the way to our Tasting Room! Note, Summit Vineyard Tastings and camping stays at the Trailer Pond require about 1 mile on a private dirt road.
Do I need a reservation, or can I just walk in?
Walk-ins are always welcome for a Tasting Room Flight, daily 10am to 4pm (last seating 3:40pm), first come, first served. If we have seats but we’re short-staffed, we’re happy to pour current wines by the glass or bottle instead of a full flight. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, and required for Summit Vineyard Tasting, Cellar Door Tasting, and to reserve our Park and Sip Picnic Area.
Which Alta Colina tasting should I choose?
It depends on what you’re after. Tasting Room Flight ($30/person, 45 to 75 minutes) is our classic, guided introduction, walk-ins welcome, best if you want an easy, hosted first stop easily accessible from Adelaida Road. Cellar Door Tasting ($40/person, 60 to 75 minutes, reservations required) puts you among barrels of aging wine for a more hands-on, geeky deep dive. Summit Vineyard Tasting ($70/person, 90 to 110 minutes, reservations required) is our most immersive option, up on the vineyard itself with the best views on the property, and it’s what most guests choose for anniversaries and special occasions. Park and Sip is our unhosted option: buy a bottle, settle onto our picnic patio, and enjoy the wines at your own pace with no host guiding you along. Outdoor only, no kids or pets.
How long does a typical tasting experience last?
To enjoy our Tasting Room Flight, allow 45 to 75 minutes. Summit Vineyard Tastings typically last 90 to 110 minutes. Cellar Door Tastings typically last about 60 to 75 minutes.
Is Alta Colina a good winery for beginners or first-time wine tasters?
Yes. Our Tasting Room Flight is guided and hosted, so someone walks you through each wine and answers questions as you go. No wine background needed, whether it’s your first flight or your fiftieth. We pride ourselves on well-informed and always welcoming hospitality.
What should experienced wine tasters or collectors know before visiting?
Whichever tasting you book, you’re drinking 100% estate fruit from a single 32-acre vineyard. You’ll learn about real block-to-block and vintage-to-vintage variation and we can get as geeky as you want. Our team is small and knowledgeable so ask about regenerative practices (no-till, cover cropping, compost extracts), our shale soils, or our elevation up to 1,800 feet. If a Summit Vineyard Tasting or a Cellar Door Tasting happens to be available when you visit, it’s a bonus: you’ll taste current releases while surrounded by vines or younger vintages aging in barrel, but staffing, harvest, and cellar work mean they’re not always on the calendar. Book what fits your schedule and let us know you want the nerdy info.
What is your large group policy?
Book groups up to 6 people at altacolina.com. Groups of 7+ have two options: contact us to book a hosted tasting for up to 12 people or book our unhosted Park and Sip experience. Our Park and Sip experience is unhosted, you will purchase bottles and enjoy a private picnic space a few feet away from the Tasting Room. Reservations are required for groups over 6 people.
Do you allow limos or tour buses?
Private transportation like limos and tour buses are welcome. Note our large group policy as we are not equipped to accommodate group over 6 people without prior reservations.
Can I share a tasting flight?
You are very welcome to share Tasting Flights.
Can I bring a picnic?
Picnics absolutely welcome. We’re happy to make Paso Robles lunch recommendations for pickup or delivery. We also offer simple and delicious cheese/charcuterie plates at the Tasting Room for a convenient snack option.
Do you have food available onsite?

Can I bring my infant or child?
Absolutely! Supervised babies and children are welcome to join you while you’re wine tasting. We request that you consider other guests’ experience during your family visit.
Are dogs allowed?
Well behaved and fully supervised dogs on leash are welcome outdoors on our patio. We request that you consider other guests’ experience and clean up after your pet.
What wine varieties does Alta Colina grow and specialize in?
Alta Colina specializes in Rhône-style wines, grown entirely on our own estate. Our lineup includes Syrah, a Mourvedre-blend, a GSM blend, Petite Sirah, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Picpoul Blanc plus lighter, drink-now options like Field Run, our Côtes du Rhône Villages-inspired red. We also dabble in traditional method sparkling wine with our Lynn’s Cuvee. Nothing we pour is sourced from outside vineyards, it all comes from our own 32 planted acres in Paso Robles’ Adelaida District.
Has Alta Colina won any awards or been featured in the press?
Alta Colina has been featured in outlets including Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Sunset Magazine, and our wines have earned top scores from major critics like Jeb Dunnuck.
Do you have onsite lodging or recommended local accommodations?
The Trailer Pond is our incredibly charming, unique, rustic vintage trailer campground! Perfect for those looking to unplug, slow down and enjoy unobstructed westside views and vintage touches. Do you have recommended local restaurants?
Paso Robles is home to some stellar restaurants! Some of our go-to casual spots: Finca, Etto Pasta Bar, Red Scooter Deli, The Hatch, and Della’s. For an elevated dinner experience some of our go-to’s include: Les Petites Canailles, In Bloom, Il Cortile, and S’Aranella. Get in touch with us–we are happy to share more local favorites around SLO County.
Where can I learn more about visiting Paso Robles wine country?
For help planning beyond Alta Colina, Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (pasowine.com) is a great resource for other tasting rooms and wine trails, and Travel Paso (travelpaso.com) covers where to stay, eat, and what else to do in town. We’re happy to point you toward our own favorites too, just ask when you visit or reach out ahead of time.
Are you open year-round?
We are open daily, 10am to 4pm. Our Tasting Room is closed on New Year’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. We are open until 2pm on select days such as Superbowl Sunday, Easter, Christmas Eve, etc. Get in touch if you’re ever wondering about our tasting availability.
What's the best time of year to visit Alta Colina?
There’s no bad time to visit Alta Colina, or Paso Robles in general. December through March is our rainy season, though it’s rare to get more than a few days of rain in a row. July and August run hot, so tastings shift inside our small, comfortable Tasting Room and the cellar. If you want to catch harvest activity, the last week of August through September is a safe bet. And keep an eye out for our Block Party each May, held at the top of the hill on the vineyard.
What is your cancellation policy for reservations?
Please cancel reservations with as much notice as possible so we can offer that tasting to another guest.
Do you offer vineyard tours or production tours?
Yes, we offer tastings at our wine production facility and tours/tastings on our estate vineyard. Book a Tasting Flight to enjoy the wines at the Winery and, if you ask nicely, we would love to walk you through the Cellar. To tour Alta Colina Vineyard, book a Summit Vineyard Tasting.
Is Alta Colina a good spot for a special occasion, like an anniversary or proposal?
Our Summit Vineyard Tasting is a private, hosted tasting up on the vineyard itself, with the best views on the property, and it’s what most guests book for anniversaries, proposals, and small celebrations. Cellar Door Tasting offers a similarly intimate setting among barrels if you’d rather be surrounded by wine in progress than views. Both require reservations and cap at 6 guests. While we do not formally host weddings or other larger events, we have occasional capacity for small celebrations (e.g. an elopement under 20 people).
Are tasting fees waived with wine purchase or club signup?
For guests in the Tasting Room, we waive one fee per two bottle purchase. Summit Vineyard Tastings are non-refundable. If you love the wines, become a member, and take your first shipment home with you that day, up to 6 fees will be waived as they are included in membership.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
Our members part of the family! Members receive two customizable shipments per year, first access to all new releases, flat-rate shipping, discounts on all purchases, invitations to member events (in person and virtual), and up to 6 tastings per visits are included in membership.
What is the tasting room ambience like? / Vineyard views?
Alta Colina is a 130-acre property in westside Paso Robles. Our Tasting Room is located just off Adelaida Road at the bottom of our 500-foot tall mountaintop estate. While you taste at the Tasting Room, you will enjoy views of a neighboring vineyard. The Tasting Room is located inside our wine production facility. It is a simple, clean, modern space with homey touches. The wines and our personal service will make more of an impression than our building! If you’d like to enjoy some of the best vineyard views in Paso Robles, book our Summit Vineyard Tasting, which is held a mile back on our property almost 500 feet higher altitude than the Tasting Room.
Do you have outdoor seating or picnic areas?
Yes! We have a wonderful patio area just outside the Tasting Room. To enjoy a picnic at Alta Colina, you can book our Park and Sip unhosted picnic space (just buy wine and enjoy without interruptions!).
Are the tastings indoors or out?
Tasting Room Flights are hosted both indoors and outside. Note, we are a small family business and our indoor space is limited. We do our best to accommodate in heat and cold weather. Note, Summit Vineyard Tastings are always held outdoors and are subject to weather cancellations.
Is your tasting room wheelchair accessible?
Of course, our Tasting Room is fully accessible.
Do you ship wine to my state?
Yes, we currently ship to over 30 states. Visit altacolina.com/shop for the full list.
